Circular No 295

Newsletter for past alumni of The Abbey School, Mt. St. Benedict, Trinidad and Tobago, W.I.
Caracas, 30 June 2007. No. 295
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Dear friends,
Some email from the old old alumni, 1942 to 1950.
Those that were between 1951 to 1959 are old alumni.
And those graduating in 1960s, like myself, contemporary alumni.
Those in 1970s to 1985 are the young alumni.
Any comments??
So here we go:

Ladislao,
Got your reply to my Email and am working on some info that you may find interesting.
The picture of Observation tower was of great interest to me as I have a picture of our tower year 1948 in I think the same place.
I will send the photograph to you by mail as I am not able at this time to put same on the computer.
Also have some other pictures I am sending for your personal files.

Request of an Award for Arthur Knaggs.
Arthur,
It was so good to contact you at last and to hear your voice.
As I was saying, Ladislao Kertesz in Venezuela (MSB Class of 1960), ably assisted by Anthony Johnson (Class of 1960), Don Mitchell (Class of about 1963), Roger Henderson (Class of 1960), Wayne Vincent Brown (Class of 1960) and I'm-sure-some-others, has pioneered the Abbey School website and has had lots of input from Old Boys around the globe.
I have recommended that one Arthur Knaggs should be given some sort of Award of Honour or Memorable Mention or whatever for your excellent work over the years to keep us all connected, through the "OASIS" magazine.
Perhaps now, Ladislao, you can talk directly to Arthur and get all the info you want to flesh out this story.
(I'm sure that Arthur, like no other, would be only too pleased to fill in a lot of the "missing links" of the early days at Mount.)
Las, I’ve spoken to Arthur today after searching for him for MANY months, and he advises that he gets to see his e-mail messages only once / twice a week when he visits his kids' homes, so don't worry too much if you don't hear from him right away.
Arthur, once more, it was great speaking with you.
Please give me a call if you're ever visiting Toronto.
Best regards to you and Valerie.
With love,
Nigel

Dear Ladislao:
Got hold of Maurice Correia who was one of the early students at MSB.
I tried but unfortunately, he says he is not interested.
What a pity, Las, I dislike having to convey negative news of this kind.

Hi Ladislao,
Got a call from Johnny Blanc with your email information which I had him foreword to me so that I could send some information to you.
My name is Allan ( Sonny ) Blanc one and the same person.
At the Abbey School I was known as Allan but some of my friends who knew me from where I grew up called me by my nickname Sonny.
I went to the College in 1947 and left in 1953.
I am 72 years old and guess I was one of the original students of the Mount.
We lived in the Monastery and there was no college building at that time.
I think there were aprox 35 Students at the time.
No playing field or swimming pool.
That was all built when we were students, including the college building and a few other buildings.
The original Headmaster in my time was Fr Bernard.
I have many fond memories of the Abbey and meet many old students from time to time.
Will write you a longer note soon and fill you in with more details.
Will have to confirm the dates above but I am pretty sure they are pretty close.
Will write soon

Hello Ladislao,
There are some Circulars that are either completely missing on the Blog or are incomplete.
I should be grateful if you would remind readers on one of the future Circulars of the missing numbers.
They are:
2001 - No 4
2002 - Nos 17, 36-43, 55 and 57

2003 - Nos 80 and 81
2005 - No 210
It would be great if one of the readers of this message has a copy or copies and can email them to me so that I can complete the missing slots.
The 2001 Circulars can be read at http://abbeyschool2001circulars.blogspot.com/.
All the later years are in "Links" in the right hand column on the home page.
Every year's Circulars can be accessed from any other year.

Hi Laci,
I did receive your inquiry about Trevor and spoke to his sister for an address.
She did not have the info but will try to get it from one of the nieces.
I do not think Trevor has an e-mail address.
The good news is that I have Tyrone’s e-mail address: tzsoodeen@shaw.ca.
He is a medical doctor and lives in the Vancouver area.
If you are able to contact him he should be able to help you out with Trevor.

Hi there,
Don’t know how you got my address, but it was interesting reading the newsletters.
I am not the Soodeen who attended MSB – my cousins Trevor (Toronto) and Scipio (Barbados) did.
In your letter to RD below you asked about Anthony Lucky –
I see him once in a while at the Pointe-a-Pierre Club.
He is now one of Trinidad’s Appeal Court judges.
Keep up the good work with your circulars, and you can remove my name from your list.

Hey Norman !!!
Your brought my best memories about Mount and our band CHAINS !!!
In fact Chains was my first Rock Group, and I will never forget our guitar lessons with Jeremy De Barry.
It was heaven at Mount !
After Chains, I travelled to the U.K. and joined The Forminks in South Wales, - it was the time of "Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band" and Jimmy Hendrix.
Where I went to study for two and a half years.
Then back in Venezuela I played with Los Hippies in the late 60's when I was starting my Law Studies at University.
Then finally, after a long break from music, I formed a Rock Group in Maracaibo called ZUMO, and we developed an incredible repertoire including so more daring songs from groups like Genesis, Santana and Yes.
It was an incredible experiment.
But I have to say this: you Norman are the BEST second guitar any band could have.
My best rock group partner ever !!!! ....
And a great well tuned voice !
And all thanks to Chains and Mount !!!
We must get together Norman and revive those days and perhaps ... who knows ... someday we may play at Mount again !
Un Abrazo Norman !!! What a great gift you've given me !!!!
Siempre Amigo !!!

Bands at Mount

Hola muchachos,
The recent circular about music makers at Mount missed one of the most memorable years in pop music history... the mid 60s.
Besides the scout band for which I played the bugle (which I replaced with a cornet after being seduced by the music of Herb Albert) there was a band called the Interpreters.
Jeremy de Barry and John Abraham had a band called the Interpreters that played calypso standards and did a mean "Walk-Don't Run".
I remember joining in with my cornet to play "Rose in Spanish Harlem".
Then the Beatles hit the scene and along with Rafael "CheChe" Echeverria on Bass, his brother Gustavo on Lead guitar, Henrique Gomez on drums and I on rhythm guitar formed "the Chains".
We taught ourselves to play with the help of Jeremy de Barry and played a great number of Beatles songs and sounded just like them.
"If I Fell". "Words of Love", "I Saw Her Standing There", "And I Love Her", "Michelle", "PS I Love You", "Baby it's You", and of course: "Chains" among many others.
Upon my graduation in 1966, we were invited to play at the presidential palace in Caracas.
I went back home to Colombia to join my life long friend Ivan Dario Lopez in his group Los Yetis (you can Google "Los Yetis" to find a MySpace page and a link to a compilation CD by our record label Discos Fuentes.
We made history as one of the first rock bands in Colombia and can boast to be the only band of the times to produce more than one LP (there were 4: "Los Yetis", Colombia a go-go", Los Yetis Vol2", and "Olvidate").
Jeremy de Barry visited me in Colombia and had a chance to live some of the excitement.
My interest and work with music continued after the band broke up with a duet with my pal Ivan Dario (Norman y Dario).
We recorded one LP for CBS Records and one EP (4 songs)... all of them original and mostly protest songs.
I stopped making music when I became a film maker specializing in editing, but music has always been an important part of my work.
In 1971 I went to live in New York and in the 70s and 80s was part of the birth of MTV... editing videos for the likes of Cyndi Lauper, Huey Lewis and the News, Bon Jovi, Carly Simon, The Rolling Stones, Rainbow, and others.
Since 1989 I live in Miami with my second wife and three teenage daughters (I have a daughter from my first marriage who has given me a grandson).
I had the joy of reuniting with Rafael "CheChe" Echeverria after almost 40 years!
We sang and played as if no time had passed!
He has kept the music in his life despite having become a most successful lawyer.
Long live the music makers from the mount!
Norman Smith

Hello Ladislao,
Thank you as always for keeping me informed.
I cannot understand why we are not reading more emails from old boys in Trinidad??
Most of the boys in Trinidad should know of or heard of the web site by now.
If not, they must be informed by the boys who do know, I think when the school closed a lot of people though that was it.
However because of you (thru blood, sweat, and tears) we are still a body in spirit, one love

Hi David,
You had the first band on the mount?
That’s good history to know, as there were a few other bands after that, that I heard about.
There were some really good musicians over the years.
You have written for some of the best bands in the Caribbean.
What a life of music you are living.
As a fellow musician, I always had a job and played on the weekends, but you lived the dream.
David where are you living now??
There is another mount boy who plays bass in Venezuela, he has a band there I read in one of the news letter.
He is before my time also.
When I left Trinidad I played calypso and Soca.
Now I think we are losing some of the Latin swing in our music, swaying calypso rhythms, being taken over by American hip- pop and dance hall, heavy bass and rhythms grooves, not much singing not much guitar not much, nothing.
I am a guitar player, so if I don't hear no guitar I am surprised, you know what I mean.
You wrote in a time when the music was really sweet.
I will love to hear your cd my address is:

I had the first band in mount we were called Mt Mariners.
I am a song writer and calypso singer.
I have written for the merrymen-byronlee-spice and co. and others .
If you send me your address I would be happy to send you my latest cd and compositions

Hi David,
My name is Glen McKoy my brother name is Hudson McKoy, we went to mount around 1967-1972.
However people said there were two others before us, but they spelled their names McCoy I don't think they were brothers ??
I am 51 yrs this year and Hudson will be 50, so you must know if we are in your age group, I remember most mount boys who were about 2 yrs older or 2 yrs younger than me.
Hudson and I played in the mount band Cosmic Vibes, our band was after Raymond McCartney band, with Francis on drums and also Milton on drums, bullet head on bass.
I think they had another guitar player; these guys were great players for their ages.
We still play music, Hudson and his son is working on a cd in Toronto, I played with bands on the weekends for many years, now I just jam with friends.
I play nylon, steel electric guitars and all styles of music, playing music is medicine, and it keeps me young.
David I don't know if I answered your question or not, but its good to hear from any old mount boys, what a time, take care, good to hear from you .

I remember a McCoy at mount but I do not remember the first name .
Were they 2 McCoy brothers ?
My name is Dave de Castro {they called me Dougles} my brother was Delano de Castro.
Any answers?
With tax season right around the corner, make sure to follow these few simple tips.
Hi there , Tim list the name McCoy is wrong its McKoy Glen and Hudson, just to get it right because before us there were also other old boys who spelled their names McCoy,
Thank you Glen very good friend of Tim Healy, a bunch of us also went to Suriname with Tim had a great time.

I'm sorry to say that I have no photos of those days.
All the images are in my mind.
I have some photos of the reunion with CheChe.
I will find them and pass them on.
Father Bernard was the principal and Father Eugene was the dean (he was the one who would give us the lashings.)
Father Cuthbert was very special to me.
He was the Scout leader..
We were all afraid of Fr, Ildefonse's hands... it was no fun getting your ears pulled by him.
I was there when the new building (new kitchen and refectory) and the theatre hall where we saw movies and performed plays and the Chains performed and practiced, was built... the stone wall that went up at the edge of the basketball court.
I was very influenced by the bamboo structures we made.
Many, many memories.
Too bad we did not have the digital cameras kids have today.
Saludos!

Dear friends,
Finally an email from the 1980 generation, why I make a distinction??
I have about 10 email addresses, all taken from the 2003 Reunion.
None of these have written the 50 words DUES, neither sent the photos of the reunion.
I have sent out in the Circular photos taken by the older generation ASSISTING THE REUNION, and I have been unable to place names on the photos that I have.
There are no class photos either, maybe these alumni have been waiting for the new digital cameras??
I had presumed that Miguel Gonzalez the chief organizer would have been kind to send information on the successful reunion, but no luck.
I hope that Neil can fill us with these photos??

Dear Ladislao,
Just in from work and great to get your email.
Raeburn, Guillen, Gonzalez etc were all class mates when we were at Mount together.
They were a year below me.
I was in Class with Garvin Gonzales and others like Gerald Dornellas who is cousin to Dornellas on the Alumni list.
I emailed Dornellas in connection with Kitty Marcus' 90th birthday, that is how I know this.
Now I am in touch with Jean van Leuwen who was secretary of the school with Kitty Marcus.
When I joined the Abbey school in 78 Jean used to teach Library science with Fr Edwards.
Am also in touch with Dr. Kathleen Phillips-Lewis (History teacher).
You can see lots of information about her on the web.
She is a distinguished historian and is working in Atlanta Georgia.
And the last teacher is Pamela Razack (nee roopchand).
She is in Trinidad and was excited when I told her that I had come across your blog.
Here are their email addresses:
"Kathleen Phillips-Lewis" kplewis@aol.com>
"Pamela Roopchand" <pjr100@hotmail.com>;
"Jean VanLeuen" <maartenmt@wanadoo.nl>
I have an old picture of my year taken by the then Abbot Hildebrand Greene in the mid 80's.
Even have old report cards.
For the reunion I was sent pictures too and could easily send them too you by post if you would like.
Also have pictures of our trip to Bogot
a Colombia in 1984.
I think it is great talking about the Abbey School.
There were unpleasant memories and good memories too.
Did you know that when I started there was only one language available, Spanish, and that there was no Literature O'level available in the 4th/5th years?
I was so annoyed about that.
Hope that this finds you well and happy.

Dear Neil
What a surprise, an alumni of the 1980s.
I say that it is a surprise because you are the first to write about life at the mount in the 1980s.

The few, about 10 alumni that we know of, are poor writers.
From my calculations about 100 alumni passed through the school in the 1980s.
There are no photos neither names.
I am the "editor" of the Circular; basically I take your emails and photos and edit them.
It is a weekly affair when I have the time.

Dear Sir,
I hope that you do not mind me writing to you?
But came across this bog yesterday.
I was at the abbey school 1978-1984.
I repeated form 5, we all can’t be brainy. :-)
I see that you are in contact with John Raeburn well we were all around at the same time.
Barry (John) and his friends were in a year below me.
I left the abbey in 84 and returned to London the place of my birth in May 1985.
I was sad when I heard that Abbey School was closing down.
I guess that we can all thank Fr. Vincent Merrique (he subsequently left Mt St Benedict's got married and had 2 children) for that.
He always maintained that Abbey School was for "rich white boys" so I guess that with an attitude like that with those views he started the ball rolling.
But I have always maintained that we were all very privileged to have attended the Abbey School.
What a school, what views, what surroundings and what a wonderful community.
I did not know this at the time but when you have time to grow up and reflect truthfully then it becomes apparent.
Through Abbey School we went to Caracas (1980) for a week with Fr Cuthbert and Mr Lange.
In 1984 we went to Bogota Colombia with Mrs Razack (Pamela), Bro Ronald Yee Mon and other class mates like Garvin Gonzales.
I could not make it to the Reunion in 2005.
I turned 40 and so I had a big celebration with my partner and friends.
However Pamela Razack sent me lots of photos.
It was good seeing old faces and it was not nice remembering others.
Hope that you do not mind my interrupting your day.
We do not know each other but as I said to Don in a previous email it is always great to hear from other old mount boys irrespective of the time they were there.
Until I hear form you again.

Peter was a day boy at Mount.
He is now 57 and has just been diagnosed with multiple myeloma and is receiving chemotherapy in Miami.
He does not have a computer available but we are trying to get him a lap top.
Myeloma is a cancer of the blood and is often contracted by people who work in petroleum related industries - which he has for most of his life.
We are having several fund raisers in Trinidad and if any one remembers him and would like to contribute you may contact his brother Chris at cheryl_ann_webster@yahoo.co.uk.
Thank you and regards, Cheryl.

Ladislao,
Thanks for your note.
I am often wrong, but my wife seldom and it is she who says it is Richard!!
To make sure the record is 100% correct I will circulate it to a couple friends who knew Richard very well and seek their confirmation.
I will advise you if there is any doubt...
As far as the rest of your request goes I would really feel as a bit of an impostor as truthfully I do not have too many memories or feel any great affinity with MSB having attended there as a very young boy 8-12, I think!!
However, as you asked so nicely (and I know you labour with this work of love) here are some titbits of information.
The only class mates I clearly remember are Brian Lewis and Edward Lloyd and I do not have any photos from that era.
On the other hand I have much better recollections of my secondary school (another Benedictine Monastery, Douai) and time studying in the UK.
If you really want a CV have a look at the link below as it pretty much sums up where I am today professionally.
Best regards,
Esmond

Ladislao,
The Ramsahai's were in the garbage business, but now they are into construction, hotel and soon pepper sauce business.
He went to MSB with me, 1970-74, his younger brother also went.
I will be seeing him in December when I go for Christmas.
Hope all is well with you and the family, all the best.

Hi Tony,
All is well.
I have been getting the circulars from Ladislao and posting them on the website http://abbeyschool2007.blogspot.com/.
He has not been as regular as previously, due to the pressure of work, but is catching up.
If you have not been receiving the Circulars, you may have accidentally dropped off his mailing list.
So, I am copying this to him for him to check he has your address in his system.
My latest passion is at the link below!
I have subscribed to your posts, and enjoy reading them.
Keep well.
Don

Dear Tim
I am going to take the opportunity to answer your questions in a long winding manner, as this shall be published in a future circular and hope that it will create enthusiasm in other alumni in getting down and write so that the circular may be produced for a few more editions.
I am a liaison between ALUMNI, and try to publish the CIRCULAR once a week.
The circular or newsletter is no a forum as would be the BLOG page run by Don, but a four to five page summary of emails received and a place where photos are touched up and given a number for future reference in case there are names or other changes to be made.
Those that take time to write me or send FW of alumni to alumni conversations are included in the newsletter.
This has helped to get together over 350 alumni over the time.
Some got together after 50 years of graduating.
The photos are welcomed and are sent to me by friends, alumni and others that want to show them.
There was a webpage created by Anthony Johnson, the originator or revised by Maroth de Marothy, but neither had time to keep it up and was abandoned.
Don got into the BLOG pages because I have published over 270 Circulars and there are some alumni that have not received all of them or are missing some.
Maybe your long lost friend appears in one of them?
I do not participate actively in creating articles although I have written some lines; it is YOU that make the Circular alive with comments, stories, anecdotes, etc.
So maybe the circular can help you get together with your classmates or a friend in particular, try it.
Remember that you must write to get into the circulars.
Additionally I can help but I need the names of your classmates to place you in the same group and need some information on each, just as George Mickiewicz has done recently.
There are two ways to read the Circulars, direct sending by yours truly and by going to the BLOG page.
If you send your comments to the BLOG page, I usually do not get a copy of these.
You must send me a FW of your message for inclusion in the Circular.
When I retire I promise I shall read all the comments in the BLOG page and shall include them in the Circular.
Each Circular usually takes about 5 hours to make, so I need help.
The preparation of the 4 photos that I try to insert takes about 1 hour.
The rest is taken up in transferring your emails to a filling system, getting the rubbish out, setting up the message, making sure that the file does not have messages that have not been sent, looking up the search function to find new ALUMNI in the web, and answering emails, warming up the alumni for resumes, articles, photos and last and not least, sending out 350 emails using 6 servers. (this has been hampered due to info lost in the cpu).
It is fun, but when I have an overload of work I am late in the circulars.
I have had many alumni writing that they do not have time to answer because of work; their answer makes me laugh because they most likely think that I do not work, (on government subsidy) or are retired (bored) or it is a hobby.
I should have stopped my editing but I have had many peasant moments when I manage to get together friends after decades.
BUT Notice: I am looking for a replacement!!! so that I may receive, read the news and do nothing.
I believe that this long winded response might answer the questions that some of you might have wanted to ask.
God Bless
Ladislao
