Dear Friends,
Enjoy Lindsay Moffat´s commentaries.
Can anyone give me a summary on Chow Fat and another on Yip Chuck.
I might have the names misspelled, anyone of the clergy at MSB help??
It is unthinkable that there are no inputs to these questions on past teachers.
I cannot believe that there is no date for the last year taught and known death date.

Hello Lindsay:
Good to hear from you after all these years!
Yes, I agree with you, the Chinese teachers were the best and the strictest.
I also always wondered what became of Mr. Chow Fat.
I think he inspired me to get into engineering school.
Sooo...what kind of fine arts are you into?
Are you still playing the piano?
After leaving the Mount I never continued the lessons, since we didn't have a piano at home.
Sometimes I wish I had.
I can still play "chop-sticks" on the keyboards though,... and a pretty mean air-guitar!
Do you still remember the name of our piano teacher?
I forget.
I think he was polish if I remember correctly.
Do you remember when he took us to a classical music concert once in Port-of-Spain.
I remember the concert was so good I fell fast asleep.

Wow, great to make contact...
Yes I remember Mr. Chow Fat very well.
Your description is accurate.
I also remember him as a good teacher who could control the class with a focused look silence and more than a few throbbing of the muscles of his cheekbones!
Algebra was not by best subject but Biology was and it was taught by Mr. Yip Chock who was my favourite teacher of all.
In fact the Chinese teachers there were the best.
Will never forget them and by strange coincidence was recently thinking of them with affection and wondering what happened to then and indeed if they were still alive.
I can't remember the frogs’ legs jumping and I never learned to spell!
Wondering who I am?
Though under the artistic name of Lindsay John now my full name:
Lindsay John Moffat.................. Now living in Glasgow, Scotland, UK and am a Fine Artist and Lecturer
Wonder how this got through to me?? Always glad to hear from 'Mountainsiders' after all this time.
Keep in touch and regards to all.
Lindsay

If I remember correctly, the skinny, chain-smoking, ping-pong playing Mr. Chow Fat was my Physics, Ordinary Math and Advanced Math class teacher in both Form IV and Form V.
I thought he was the best teacher of the bunch.
He was allergic to chalk dust and he constantly had to go to the infirmary to see the nurse for treatment.
One time he even had to use latex gloves to teach the class.
Somewhere in the MSB box I still have a copy of a letter of recommendation from him for my university applications.
Miss Kitty Marcus was our Chemistry teacher, in both form IV and form V.

Andres Larsen asked..
Do you remember Mr. Chow Fat?
Yes I do. Mr. Chow Fat was the mathematics teacher for some time (Algebra & Geometry) I think Physics also.
Like Mr. Yip Chock I had admiration for him too though I did not do so good at mathematics or physics - my fault not his I simply could not maintain the concentration and lost interest.
I think the Chinese teachers were the best and very focused.
I remember him as being very skinny with spiky hair and looked very young too though I could not say his age then. He had a way of instilling discipline without shouting or hitting or making a fuss - if one misbehaved he would turn to look directly at you silently, eyes like daggers and the muscles of his jawbone pumping rapidly - a look that made one feel like he was saying 'You stupid little boy' and made one's ego shrink to about the size of an ant.
A good way to shut you up without doing very much.
There was another trick up his sleeve though - If you played the fool when his back was turned (when he was at the black board for example) he could spin round rapidly and send his chalk flying, hitting you in the head with it with pin-point accuracy every time. No one could ever figure out how he did that!
Needless to say he was good at sport - Ping Pong to be precise - so fast, focused and agile he was.
One of the reasons why I think he got on well with the boys during recreation.
Though I have often wondered I know nothing of his history.
How did he come to be a teacher? - how did he come to be at Mt. St. Benedict?
Where did he come from before that?
What was his ancestry?
Perhaps these questions will always remain a mystery.
Does anybody know where he is now??

Hi Jan:
Glad you liked it and that Ladislao is now sending you the MSB circulars.
Did he send you the old ones too?
I am, currently in Pennsylvania attending the US Army Test Pilot School.
It is fascinating but very intense, like drinking from a fire hose.
We are studying one entire system (e.g. flight control system, hydraulics system, electrical system, engine system, anti-ice system, etc. etc.) at a time and then perform all the prescribed flight tests on that system.
The final flight exam is going to be a summary of all the systems at once, with simulated multiple failures.
Everybody here in class is sweating bullets and unfortunately a few pilots have washed out already.
Hopefully I should graduate in one more month or so, (depending on the bad weather here if we can complete all the flight-test periods - in addition to the academics - on time)...then return home.

Greetings (temporarily) from Pennsylvania

I got your Chinese Food Market via Andres.
It looks good man.
Hard to imagine people eat it.
In Surinam being a little boy these Javanese people gave me all sorts of strange kinds of food to eat.
So, once accustomed, you eat it the rest of your life, like snake and so.
But these scorpions, no, never, and the other things look like large cockroaches, yikes.
I am getting regular circulars now from Ladislao, he is catching up.
Father Christopher is in Holland for medical aid.
He had an operation on his heart last year, four bypasses and he is here now for checking up.
He saw me in a circular and phoned me and I visited him, about 60 km away.
Very good to talk to old Mount people after so long time.
Thanks for the pps file.
Greetings from the Netherlands.

This is for now, keep well

Dear Andres,
This is Fr Christopher.
Upon reading your memories I felt compelled to update you a bit.
I still have vague memories of you and some of the others you mention.
I believe you had more contact with my cousin Fr. Edward, who unfortunately died at the relatively young age of 50 from cancer about 17 years ago.
I myself left to study for my theology doctorate by the middle of 1966 and when I returned you had left abbey school already.
I want to refresh your memory of some of the other priests who are still with us today:
Fr. Benedict (Vush),
Fr. Augustine (Rughead),
Fr. Odo.
You may also remember Br. Gerard (or Rupert as he was then known).
Miss Kitty Marcus is still among the living and retired to a nursing home which we opened some twenty years ago near the sportsfield. She is in her nineties. Her mind is still very clear and if you go to see her you must at least put aside some two hours. She does ask for you from time to time and remembers you very well, you were one of her special boys I get the impression.
Mr Basanta still lives down the road not far from the abbey.
The many others priests you must have known have all passed on (Frs. Bernard, Peter Canisius, Chrysostom Lee Singh, Francis, Abbot Adelbert, Br. Camillus of the apiary,
Fr. Gregory and his brother Theo and so many others.
You must try and visit us some time after all these years.
You will be most welcome.
Wishing you the very best and especially a glorious Easter.

Hi Ladislao,
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & God's Blessings to you & your family.

Also to our 'mount family', the best of health & happiness.

I often read most of your news and it is a good deed that you are doing.

You must still be a scout. (I have been a scout without being legally one. Ed.)

I will get more involved in the conversation as time goes by and make your day a little brighter.

I left Trinidad/Abbey School in 1974 to study in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cda.

I moved back to Trinidad in 1978 & got married to Lynda Sookra (St Augustine Girl's HS) in 1980.

We had our son Gino on 28 Dec 1980.

Lynda & I both work for RBC Royal Bank of Canada & Gino Works for CIBC Melon Corp.

We all work for the banks but we are also very much involved in recording music.

I will send you some of our music so you can take a listen & share it with the other mount boys (& girls).

Your perseverance & patience has paid off, I salute you.

When you are in Toronto, call me & I'll pick you up & we'll talk.

I live at :1007 Bancroft Dr. Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. L5V1A4.

Phone: H:905-542-7782. W:905-671-6547.

I will try to keep in touch more often.
Thanks,

Dear Scipio
Good to hear from you.

Would like to receive your Resume for posterity.

The photos are welcome.

Have you visited Correia at his shop?

Has he a car collection?

Please ask him for a photo or ten words.

I have not been able to convince him to respond to my emails, maybe he does not receive them.

I have good memories of various trips to your island.

Stephen Tempro has a hotel over there.

I knew a few people at cable and wireless, all have retired.

There is a Hungarian named Tar, no connection to MSB who moved over from Caracas in the 70s

Hi Laszlo:
Thanks for reply and hope U have a merry Christmas and happy new year.
Well settled into my new home in New Brunswick and so far this has been a mainly snow-less winter, had a green Christmas in the Saint John area where I have settled. Spent Christmas with my son who visited from Baltimore and my daughter and family who also live in my area.
Spoke with one of my old class mates, Richard Galt, just before Christmas we had not spoken since he relocated to Florida from the Toronto area many years ago.
The internet what would we do without it.
Looking forward to a new year that will include my singing with the Saint John Choral group that I joined in November just in time for the Christmas season and spring season for fishing in the mainly rivers around this area.
Before I forget my new email address is rjdabadie@gmail.com.
God bless – Roland

Thanks but have one more request.
I have moved from Toronto to Rothesay, New Brunswick, which is just outside of Saint John, having retired from the Ontario Civil Service after 30 plus years, primarily working with the Ministry of the Attorney General.

I am not sure if they are any Mount boys in this area, although I believe that there are a few in Halifax which is a lot closer than Toronto but still a drive of between 21/2 to 3 hours, in good weather.

Winter is not far off for us.

Anyhow, thought I had sent u my new email address which is rjdabadie@gmail.com and would appreciate u changing your records when u get a chance.

Would like to take this opportunity to again thank you for all the hard work u put into keeping the Circulars coming.
Many thanks – Roland

Dear Friends,
Some more stories by George Mickiewicz:
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

ADVENTURES IN BARODA, INDIA
George Mickiewicz
Monday, January 1, 2007 7:21:48 AM
I have made 2 consulting trips to India in the last 3 months. Came away with a number of reflections
OCTOBER, 2006 TRIP
People, people, people, people everywhere sitting, conversing, playing, walking, on bicycles and motorcycles, scooters, rickshaws, cars, buses, pushing carts, etc. – just an unimaginable mass of human beings and transportation modes
Tropical beauty that I had not seen since I lived in Venezuela and Trinidad or visited Brazil or Puerto Rico
Thousands of little business stands along all the roads that we travelled
Poverty everywhere we went
Animals everywhere including in the middle of roads (cows, bulls, dogs, monkeys, camels, goats, lambs but did not see a single cat) all very malnourished – animals are held sacred
Children, some barely walking, playing on the side of dangerous roads and relieving themselves when needed
Everyone I met was friendly and attentive
Hot and spicy food with meat (cows) never served; had roti for the first time since the Trinidad days.
Two of the team members coming down with stomach maladies that kept them down for 2 days.
Being very careful about what I ate and drank.
Cricket matches shown on television plus lots of coverage in the local newspapers; the national teams representing all the cricket playing nations including the WI were involved in a round-robin tournament in India for the ????? Cup (do not recall its name).
DECEMBER 2006, TRIP
Looking through the immense physical poverty at the people; saw them smiling, laughing and taking care of their hygiene in simple ways like brushing their teeth and washing their faces at water sources at the side of roads. The disadvantaged eating together on the side of the roads and sharing their food with others in large groups.
Small kids begging for money on the street, parking lots and on the roads.
Performed a little data collection around the driving practices in one trip between the plant and the hotel. It was about a 10-12 mile trip from one side to the other side of town and having to travel through downtown area; it took about 25 minutes:
Ø Travelled through 12 major intersections with only one having a traffic light. The intersection with the traffic signal also had a big timer that showed drivers how many seconds were left for the signal to change.
Ø Driver sounded the horn in our car 227 times during this single trip.
Ø 13 near misses where I estimated that we came within 6-12 inches of another vehicle, person or animal.
Ø 4 times the driver gave “the look”; the closest thing that I saw to road rage. The driver would stare very seriously, long and hard at another driver as he passed the other vehicle when the other person was deemed to have done something wrong.
Ø No accidents observed in this trip. But during my stay we were bumped once by another car and another time by a motorcycle.
Ø Did not see a single serious accident during these 2 weeks that I was there.
Some big shot stayed at our hotel one night; observed about 60 soldiers with machine guns in and outside the hotel plus secret service types. Never found out who it was.
Very genuine, friendly and attentive staff at the hotel.
Read a very sobering UN article entitled “The Richest 2% Own Half of Global Wealth” with the following points addressed in the article:
v 50% of the global population owns 1% of the world’s wealth.
v To be among the most affluent 10% required $61,000 in assets
v To be among the 1% richest required >$500,000 in assets.
v A quarter of the world’s wealthiest live in the USA followed in descending order by Japan, Germany, Italy, Britain, France and Spain.
Everyone, I mean everyone, has a cell phone as they are extremely affordable.
Indians love jewellery and invest in gold jewellery as a way of saving for the future and off-setting inflation. They took me to one of their jewellery stores and the choice was mind-boggling but very expensive. I learned that about 80% of all diamonds from Africa are cut and polished in India . Their workmanship and artistry with gold, platinum, silver and other precious metals and stones was amazing. Out of curiosity priced some items in 22-kt gold that I thought my wife Fara would have liked; total cost prior to taxes $5635.
The hot and spicy food was easier to eat this time.
The whole state, Gujarat , is dry and alcohol is officially unavailable but can be obtained if one wants to. Alcohol is available in all other states in India . I inquired to find that this is due to Gandhi being born in this state and he was against alcohol; so this has been done in his honour.
Bollywood is real. In the newspaper every day there were dozens of articles on the stars. Dozens of Indian movies were advertised in the paper and TV.
Discussed several cultural and social aspects with my hosts or read about them in the newspaper:
ü Arranged marriages are successful because the parents can relate family values, beliefs and other key human factors. The son or daughter can back out after meeting the other party without negative repercussions.
ü Divorce rate is extremely low except in the Bollywood crowd.
ü Topic of being gay or lesbian is taboo.
ü Women have started to become a significant factor in the work force but very few have crashed the corporate glass ceiling within Indian companies.
ü Many Indians are leaving the country for opportunities in other parts of the world; USA and Australia seem to be the first choice for most
Still cannot fail to be amazed to seeing in the plant groups of monkeys, peacocks, an occasional snake, dogs (but no cats – I have yet to see one, period), plus bunches of different birds.
The December visit completed my obligations. Not sure where my next adventure will lead me in 2007, God willing.
On a personal and spiritual level these experiences have again reaffirmed my need to follow Jesus’ teachings that I share my “wealth” with those in need. I have tried to put this into practice this Christmas season as I prepared to celebrate the birth of Our Lord.
Be blessed, be good and be safe y’all,
George
