Hi Ladislao & Fellow MSB Friends and Colleagues:
Greetings from Mumbai (Bombay), India .
I will be in Baroda in a consulting role for Reliance for the next 2 weeks.
Three plane flights and 36 hours in transit gave me an opportunity to reflect on the important aspects of my life that I personally experienced and gained at MSB.
Glimpses of my memory involving spiritual foundation follow:
  • Mandatory daily mass and in late 1950’s the option to study or attend mass.
  • Sunday evening benediction with the distinct aroma of incense.
  • Kneeling to receive communion.
  • Latin transitioning to English after Vatican II.
  • Weekly hymn practices led by Father Eugene.
  • Praying the rosary.
  • Religion classes.
  • Stations of the Cross during lent.
  • Confessions ………. good, bad and in-between.
  • The progression (regression) from front to the back of the chapel as one graduated from one class to the next higher one.
  • Gregorian chant when we attended masses at the Abbey. The monks led by Father Benedict.
  • Attending the funeral mass when a member of the MSB community died.
  • The seminary and the seminarians.
  • Mount Tabor ….. not sure why and how it gained this name but always assumed that it had some relation to the one in scripture.
  • Sweating like a …. when we had to wear our tie and wool blazer to special masses.
  • “The Secret Society”- not sure how much general awareness existed of this group and we, its members, did not publicize it for obvious reasons. “The Good Boys Club” was formed by Father Cuthbert in 1962. We would meet in the Boy Scouts’ building weekly to pray, say the rosary, share personal “good” acts, scripture, etc. Not sure if this effort continued beyond my graduation in December, 1962.
  • Waking up at 5am to wake up the 2 servers who would assist in the early mass at 5:15.
  • Going down to serve mass for one of the monks at one of the side chapels in the Abbey’s Church.
  • The pilgrimage to Mount Saint Mary? (I believe) when Form V boys walked from MSB to the aforementioned location to join a huge crowd who prayed the rosary.
  • Sneaking in a gulp of wine in the sacristy after serving a mass if the priest had leftover wine.
  • How time, societies, cultures and religion change. The monks at MSB and our teachers were primarily Dutch; very conservative at the time. Today the Dutch and its Catholic Church are one of the most liberal in the world. Wonder what our school would have been in today’s environment versus what we experienced 45-50 years ago?
Today I am a practicing Catholic trying to serve God in the best possible way that the Lord is leading me; a sinner in a journey to become a being that Jesus will beckon to be one of His own when I complete my life on earth.
I attribute my early spiritual foundation to 2 entities: my parents and the MSB community.
Be Blessed, Be Good and Be Safe y’all,
George (Shish, Yury)

Subject: 1956-1962 REFLECTIONS - STUDIES
Date: Sat, 27 Jan 2007 08:52:17 -0600
While at MSB, the major part of the day, other than sleeping, was spent STUDYING.
These studies increased in Form V when the boys would stay up late and/or rise early in the morning to prepare for the GCE examinations.
My memory is pretty blurry as to what subjects we took in which Form and which teacher taught which class/subject.
Do remember that we were expected to be quiet, pay attention, be organized, participate, do our homework and study hard.
This focused approach developed a discipline within me that helped me very much in my university studies and subsequently in my work.
It is helping me today in my consulting efforts.
Related glimpses:
Bernardo Fontaine mailing me the results of how our class feared in the GCEs.
Miss Kitty sending me the certificate which is the only memento that I have found so far of that era. It is attached.
Performing crazy experiments in Biology, Chemistry and Physics in the Lab.
Our books were small in size compared to the ones used by kids today. Also significantly lower cost.
Having to perform all mathematical calculations mentally versus the calculators, slide rules and computers that followed in subsequent decades. Abacuses did exist then but we were not allowed to use them!!!!!
Penmanship and spelling were very important; today I deal with the corresponding differences between the British and American versions of the English language.
A real problem if one truly needed to go to the bathroom during class.
Taking piano lessons from the Polish gentleman.
Writing a letter home very week during the evening study period.
Being rewarded for good grades by my mother with Bolivares (at that time 3 Bolivares = 1USA$)
I am also attaching a family picture taken in 2006.
Be blessed, be good and be safe y’all,
George (Shish, Yury)
(Please resend photo, I lost it! Ed.)

Need photos of Chow Fat and David Basanta for the records.

From: "Attila GYURIS" gyuris@yahoo.com,
To: "Wayne Brown" wvb@kasnet.com,
Hello Wayne:
Thanks for writing. Welcome to the group.
Let me know, and if you like, I will add your name to my list and forward you the threads we are discussing, so you can contribute with some memories or pictures also.
Ladislao Kertesz is an old boy from the late 50's early 60's who is sending out monthly circulars with email threads and picture contributions from many of us.
If you want you can ask him to put you on his list so you get the circulars too.
Send him a request to: kertesz11@yahoo.com,
You can also find a bunch of old circulars and Abbey School photos in Don Mitchell's website: http://msbtunapuna.blogspot.com/,
By reading those circulars you can catch up on a lot of what has been happening at the Mount.
From the dates it seems you were at the Mount before me.
I was there from 1964 to 1969.
Wow, I didn't know that David Basanta had been a student there too.
Indeed he was my Spanish teacher throughout my years there.
Regarding Miss Kitty Marcus, I am not sure of her age, but she is very much alive and retired.
She is still mentally very sharp with a great memory, I am told.
I don't know of her past history.
I do know she spoke perfect German.
In fact she gave German private lessons to Andres Larsen, maybe he can update you on her background.
I don't have a picture of her but maybe someone from the list can send you a photo.
There was an Old Boys reunion at the Mount in 2003 and she was there.
As you may know the school closed some time ago and is now used as a drug rehab centre.
The Abbey Monastery is still there, but with a much reduced monk population.
I think the best person to update you on Miss Kitty Marcus would be Fr. Cuthbert, who is at the monastery, or old boy Michael "Specs" D'Ornellas, who lives in Trinidad and has seen Miss Marcus recently.
How about it, Andres or Specs?
Just curious, how did you run into my email?
Regards,
Attila GYURIS

Dear Attila―
You wont know me--at least, I don’t remember you--but I was at the Mount from '55 to '60, and I gather from yours you were there sometime in the sixties.
The reason I'm writing is that yours mentioned Kitty Marcus, and did so as though she were still alive.
Is that true?
Incredible if she is; she must be at least 105!
She was a good friend of my aunt when I was a student there, I thought of them as being roughly the same age, and my aunt would be 107 if she were alive today.
So I'm wondering. Kitty was a Polish (I think) Jew and escaped Hitler's Gestapo in the nick of time.
She was one of a handful of European Jews who wound up in Trinidad in the late 30s-early 40s, having fled the Nazis.
As for the others you mention, I seem to remember that Yip Chuck came late in my time at the Mount, and David Basanta was briefly in the same class as me--I didnt know he later taught there.
And I don't know the others.
One "Chinaman", though, who was definitely not a good teacher--though he was an amiable and amusing man--was Father Chris, a Trinidadian priest. (I'm pretty sure he was still there in your time.)
He used to pray for a jockey called Sy Joseph who in return used to give him presents whenever the horse he was riding won, and the result was that Fr Chris was always interrupting our French or Spanish classes to listen to some horserace or other.
He also had terrific aim when pelting his duster at some student's head.
Anyway--be interested in news of Kitty Marcus if you have any.
Best,
Wayne Brown

Hi Specs:
If you see Cecil Camacho, tell him I have his old Chemistry Book.!
Is Mr. Basanta retired? I am sure he is, just asking.
Do you know if he did keep teaching at the Abbey School until it closed?
So, who operated the projector when you got on the Black list and couldn't watch the movies?
Or were you exempt?
Thanks for all the updates and prompt answers.
You are a wealth of info.
Feliz Navidad

Hi Attila,
Here are some answers to your questions.
I was told that David Narine died of cancer in Canada.
I cannot remember if he was head prefect.
You are correct, Yip chuck was a very heavy smoker .... I am not sure if he died of lung cancer.
No, I do not know what ever happened to Mr. Chow Fat Basanta lived on St. Johns Road leading up to the Mount and still lives there .... I will pass your regards to him and Miss Marcus.
When I see her next I will take some pictures and sent it to you.
Cecil Camacho is a prominent Lawyer here in Trinidad.
Yes, I operated the projector at Bennett's Hall for seven years and was responsible for ordering the movies.
I took over that position from Fr. Augustine ( RUG HEAD )
Have to run now ...... once again, Merry Christmas.

Hi Specs:
Great update, thanks.
I too remember David Naraine, especially in the production "Hello Dolly" in which he was dressed as Dolly and a "Man for all Seasons".
Sorry to hear his passing.
What was the cause, do you know? Wasn't he a head prefect at one time? Either before or after Clark became the head prefect
Don't remember anything about Ronald Torry, but the last name sounds vaguely familiar.
OJO REVISAR INFO DE MR.CHOW ETC.
I didn't get to take Biology in Form IV and V, since it was either that or Physics. Nobody couldn't take both due to schedule conflicts.
So I didn't get to have Mr.Yip Chuck, but I remember him.
He was a heavy smoker too wasn't he? Sorry to hear he died too.
Do you know what became of Mr. Chow Fat?
If you see Mr. Basanta, please give him my fond regards.
He was my Spanish teacher also, and probably of all of the other Venezuelans too, of course a cakewalk subject for us.
I think he used to live in a house Tunapuna village on the East side of the main road up to the Mount.
Same for Miss Marcus.
Give her a hug for me.
She (along with Mr. Chow Fat) was my favorite teacher in Foms IV & V.
When you see her next, please tell her that her Chemistry classes (and especially her lab sessions in qualitative and quantitative analysis) influenced me the most into choosing my degree in Chemical Engineering.
Would you believe, in my library I still have that green "A New Certificate Chemistry" by Holderness & Lambert textbook that we used in class.
It is such an excellent book that I still refer to it occasionally, even though it was published over 40 years ago.
And I am the second owner too, because the first owner was Cecil Camacho, his name and some of his handwritten notes are in still in the inside pages of the book.
Thanks for the name of the piano teacher.
It still doesn't ring a bell.
Specs, besides your many talents as the class clown, and abstract art painter, weren't you one of the film projector operators for the Saturday night movies?
Peace and Merry Christmas to all,
Attila Gyuris

Dear Attila,
Thanks for this info.
I often wondered what had become of Lindsay.
I remember him quite well .. he was an extremely talented artist and painted many back drops for our plays.
I think Lindsay was connected with ' Mount Inside '.
If I am correct, he was friendly with David Narine, who was very talented and was responsible for many grand productions at Bennett's hall.
Unfortunately, David passed away quite some time ago.
Another talented guy in that group was Ronald Torry .... I have no info on him.
Chow Fat was my Math teacher, he was an extremely good teacher.
I understand that his brain got the better of him.
Mr. Yip Chuck was my Biology teacher ( That was my favourite science subject ) He also was extremely good teacher.
He died of cancer about 15 years ago or longer ... he lived in San Fernando.
I made several visits to his home after I left the Mount.
Another teacher I see from time to time is Mr. David Basanta, he was my Spanish & English teacher.
Last year, I arranged an evening of Sacred Music at the Abbey Church and it fell on Miss Marcus's Birthday.
She had a wonderful time and is still bright as a button.
I am planning another some time in 2007.
I think your Piano teacher was Professor Katz ( not sure if spelt right ) He was Jewish.
Anyway, Merry Christmas to you and your family.

Sooo...what kind of fine arts are you into?
Are you still playing the piano? After leaving the Mount I never continued the lessons, since we didn't have a piano at home. Sometimes I wish I had. I can still play "chop-sticks" on the keyboards though,... and a pretty mean air-guitar!
Do you still remember the name of our piano teacher? I forget. I think he was polish if I remember correctly. Do you remember when he took us to a classical music concert once in Port-of-Spain. I remember the concert was so good I fell fast asleep.

Yes I remember Mr. Chow Fat very well.
Your description is accurate.
I also remember him as a good teacher who could control the class with a focused look silence and more than a few throbbing of the muscles of his cheekbones!
Algebra was not by best subject but Biology was and it was taught by Mr. Yip Chock who was my favourite teacher of all.
In fact the Chinese teachers there were the best.
Will never forget them and by strange coincidence was recently thinking of them with affection and wondering what happened to then and indeed if they were still alive.
I can't remember the frogs’ legs jumping and I never learned to spell!
Wondering who I am?

If I remember correctly, the skinny, chain-smoking, ping-pong playing Mr. Chow Fat was my Physics, Ordinary Math and Advanced Math class teacher in both Form IV and Form V.
I thought he was the best teacher of the bunch.
He was allergic to chalk dust and he constantly had to go to the infirmary to see the nurse for treatment.
One time he even had to use latex gloves to teach the class.
Somewhere in the MSB box I still have a copy of a letter of recommendation from him for my university applications.
Miss Kitty Marcus was our Chemistry teacher, in both form IV and form V.

Andres Larsen asked..
Do you remember Mr. Chow Fat?
Yes I do. Mr. Chow Fat was the mathematics teacher for some time (Algebra & Geometry) I think Physics also.
Like Mr. Yip Chock I had admiration for him too though I did not do so good at mathematics or physics - my fault not his I simply could not maintain the concentration and lost interest.
I think the Chinese teachers were the best and very focused.
I remember him as being very skinny with spiky hair and looked very young too though I could not say his age then. He had a way of instilling discipline without shouting or hitting or making a fuss - if one misbehaved he would turn to look directly at you silently, eyes like daggers and the muscles of his jawbone pumping rapidly - a look that made one feel like he was saying 'You stupid little boy' and made one's ego shrink to about the size of an ant.
A good way to shut you up without doing very much.
There was another trick up his sleeve though - If you played the fool when his back was turned (when he was at the black board for example) he could spin round rapidly and send his chalk flying, hitting you in the head with it with pin-point accuracy every time. No one could ever figure out how he did that!
Needless to say he was good at sport - Ping Pong to be precise - so fast, focused and agile he was.
One of the reasons why I think he got on well with the boys during recreation.
Though I have often wondered I know nothing of his history.
How did he come to be a teacher? - how did he come to be at Mt. St. Benedict?
Where did he come from before that?
What was his ancestry?
Perhaps these questions will always remain a mystery.
Does anybody know where he is now??

Hi Jan:
Glad you liked it and that Ladislao is now sending you the MSB circulars.
Did he send you the old ones too?
I am, currently in Pennsylvania attending the US Army Test Pilot School.
It is fascinating but very intense, like drinking from a fire hose.
We are studying one entire system (e.g. flight control system, hydraulics system, electrical system, engine system, anti-ice system, etc. etc.) at a time and then perform all the prescribed flight tests on that system.
The final flight exam is going to be a summary of all the systems at once, with simulated multiple failures.
Everybody here in class is sweating bullets and unfortunately a few pilots have washed out already.
Hopefully I should graduate in one more month or so, (depending on the bad weather here if we can complete all the flight-test periods - in addition to the academics - on time)...then return home.

Greetings (temporarily) from Pennsylvania

I am getting regular circulars now from Ladislao, he is catching up.

He had an operation on his heart last year, four bypasses and he is here now for checking up.

Dear Andres,
This is Fr Christopher.
Upon reading your memories I felt compelled to update you a bit.
I still have vague memories of you and some of the others you mention.
I believe you had more contact with my cousin Fr. Edward, who unfortunately died at the relatively young age of 50 from cancer about 17 years ago.
I myself left to study for my theology doctorate by the middle of 1966 and when I returned you had left abbey school already.
I want to refresh your memory of some of the other priests who are still with us today:
Fr. Benedict (Vush),
Fr. Augustine (Rughead),
Fr. Odo.
You may also remember Br. Gerard (or Rupert as he was then known).
Miss Kitty Marcus is still among the living and retired to a nursing home which we opened some twenty years ago near the sportsfield. She is in her nineties. Her mind is still very clear and if you go to see her you must at least put aside some two hours. She does ask for you from time to time and remembers you very well, you were one of her special boys I get the impression.
Mr Basanta still lives down the road not far from the abbey.
The many others priests you must have known have all passed on (Frs. Bernard, Peter Canisius, Chrysostom Lee Singh, Francis, Abbot Adelbert, Br. Camillus of the apiary,
Fr. Gregory and his brother Theo and so many others.
You must try and visit us some time after all these years.
You will be most welcome.
Wishing you the very best and especially a glorious Easter.

Dear Friends,
One of the schemes to get old boys to respond was the call, ” Wanted Alive and Healthy”.
There were few that answered.

Hi Ladislao,
Merry Christmas, Happy New Year & God's Blessings to you & your family.

Also to our 'mount family', the best of health & happiness.

I often read most of your news and it is a good deed that you are doing.

You must still be a scout. (I have been a scout without being legally one. Ed.)

I will get more involved in the conversation as time goes by and make your day a little brighter.

I left Trinidad/Abbey School in 1974 to study in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Cda.

I moved back to Trinidad in 1978 & got married to Lynda Sookra (St Augustine Girl's HS) in 1980.

We had our son Gino on 28 Dec 1980.

Lynda & I both work for RBC Royal Bank of Canada & Gino Works for CIBC Melon Corp.

We all work for the banks but we are also very much involved in recording music.

I will send you some of our music so you can take a listen & share it with the other mount boys (& girls).

Your perseverance & patience has paid off, I salute you.

When you are in Toronto, call me & I'll pick you up & we'll talk.

I live at :1007 Bancroft Dr. Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. L5V1A4.

Phone: H:905-542-7782. W:905-671-6547.

I will try to keep in touch more often.
Thanks,
Hudson McKoy. Mount boy- 1969-74.
(I am in expectation to get the CD. Ed.)

Hi Ladislao,
Sorry about the late reply, I have been very busy with work & my music.
I have been receiving your messages but since they are long I haven't quite read through them all.
I'll keep in touch.

Dear Scipio
Good to hear from you.

Would like to receive your Resume for posterity.

The photos are welcome.

Have you visited Correia at his shop?

Has he a car collection?

Please ask him for a photo or ten words.

I have not been able to convince him to respond to my emails, maybe he does not receive them.

I have good memories of various trips to your island.

Stephen Tempro has a hotel over there.

I knew a few people at cable and wireless, all have retired.

There is a Hungarian named Tar, no connection to MSB who moved over from Caracas in the 70s
God Bless
Ladislao

Hi Laszlo:
Thanks for reply and hope U have a merry Christmas and happy new year.
Well settled into my new home in New Brunswick and so far this has been a mainly snow-less winter, had a green Christmas in the Saint John area where I have settled. Spent Christmas with my son who visited from Baltimore and my daughter and family who also live in my area.
Spoke with one of my old class mates, Richard Galt, just before Christmas we had not spoken since he relocated to Florida from the Toronto area many years ago.
The internet what would we do without it.
Looking forward to a new year that will include my singing with the Saint John Choral group that I joined in November just in time for the Christmas season and spring season for fishing in the mainly rivers around this area.
Before I forget my new email address is rjdabadie@gmail.com.
God bless – Roland

Ladislao:
Thanks but have one more request.
I have moved from Toronto to Rothesay, New Brunswick, which is just outside of Saint John, having retired from the Ontario Civil Service after 30 plus years, primarily working with the Ministry of the Attorney General.

I am not sure if they are any Mount boys in this area, although I believe that there are a few in Halifax which is a lot closer than Toronto but still a drive of between 21/2 to 3 hours, in good weather.

Winter is not far off for us.

Anyhow, thought I had sent u my new email address which is rjdabadie@gmail.com and would appreciate u changing your records when u get a chance.

Would like to take this opportunity to again thank you for all the hard work u put into keeping the Circulars coming.
Many thanks – Roland

Well, another Circular with a newcomer, hope we can keep up with the traffic?

I require photos and memorabilia!!!!
